Welcome to the safe sex blog
By Lois McGuire, R.N., M.S.N., W.H.N.P.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are common, but if you acquire one you'll likely be hurt, confused and embarrassed. You'll be unsure who you can talk to about having an STD.
This blog will be able to help you to learn about safe sex and the possible infections, preventions and treatments. It will also be a place for you to openly discuss your concerns and feelings. Perhaps together, we can give support to persons newly diagnosed with an STD, reduce the incidence of STDs and promote a healthier sexual world.
STDs are caused by sexually transmitted viruses or bacteria. They are passed from one person to another during sexual or intimate contact.
There are now more than 25 diseases spread by sexual activity. Some are curable — some are not. Here are some basic facts about STDs in the United States:
- 19 million cases are diagnosed each year
- Half of these cases occur among people 15-24 years old
- 65 million people live with an incurable STD
Worldwide, hundreds of millions of people are infected each year.
Please let me know if you have suggestions, and welcome to the blog. I look forward to a constructive conversation with you.

Lois, Unfortunately I have made the bad decision to have sex with a lot of women since getting divorced without protection. I have contracted HPV, fortunately to a small degree. I had the first outbreak of three frozen off. It has been some time since then and I have two more, that are far apart. Not is not my main concern however. I am endowed and find it hard not to sit on a toilet seat without my penis rubbing against the lower rim. I now have what looks like two spots of bad dry skin on the head of my penis that I can't remedy with lotion. I would like to know your thoughts on the matter. Thank you.

Dear Stephanie, Unless you are on a birth control that prevents periods, it is important for women to have a period at least every 3-4 months. Genital herpes will not cause your periods to stop. I would encourage you to make an appointment with your provider. My biggest concern is abnormal changes in the cells of the endometrium (the lining of the uterus). This can happen when a woman doesn't shed her endometrium (have periods) regularly.

Dear Dakota, Many younger women with a good immune system clear HPV on their own. That is why the pap smear guidelines are changing for younger women. If we leave a healthy young women alone, her body is often capable of clearing the virus. There is no cure that a provider can give you to get rid of the virus.

Dear Ola, It is safe and not harmful to have sex every day. Make sure your partner is also happy to have sex every day or it could seem like a burden to him or her with time.

HPV, a nasty disease but is there a treatment/cure to completely rid ones body of it? I like this site, it almost makes it seem like a joy to have an STD which relieves the majority and gives people like me a place to trust when persuing a cure. A+

Dear Mara, Usually when someone describes green fluid, I think of trichomoniasis. Some bacterias can cause this as well. It could be that the antibiotic you took was not effective for the cause of your symtoms. I would go back to a provider and ask them do cultures and look at the cells under a microscope. Remember to abstain from sexual intercourse or protect your partner with condom use until you have had an effective treatment.

This green fluid is even after having taken antibiotics and using vaginal cream. Anyway it continues.

Dear Alyssia, The most important things are: First of all, both partners should be tested for any infections before having intercourse so if there is an STI, you can either treat it or if it is untreatable, you can decide if you are willing to take the risk by having sex with that partner. Secondly, a condom does not protect 100% but it does protect for many diseases.

yes you can spread herpes by kissing. And you can spread it at mor than one location: any area that has mucous membranes are suseptible -including your eyes, mouth, vaginal areas etc. But that is not the only areas that can become infected, or show active lesions. SOme people report getting them on mom-mucous tissues on their legs, and buttocks. There are several treatments for the painful sysmptoms, but so far there are no known cures.
