Blog: Don't get burned by sun, bugs and spoiled food

Even though I'm a dedicated Web user, it's summer in Minnesota and that means getting outside. As I write this, I've been enjoying some days along a northern Wisconsin lake training a retriever, catching some bass, catching up with family, and swimming with my previously caught and released game fish.

Though it's definitely the way to live, it's good to remember that precautions are in order.

  • Use sunscreen. We northerners don't typically see a lot of sun at this angle, but it's certainly time to slather up with SPF 15 or more.
  • Practice food safety. Picnics should have lots of great potato salad, make sure it hasn't cooked up any bacterial bonuses.
  • Wear insect repellent and protective clothing. Those charming mosquitoes aren't just a pain, they could deliver a lovely dose of West Nile Virus. The pups dragging me through the woods give me lots of opportunity to encounter the agent that causes Lyme disease as well. It's a jungle out there.

Hope you're enjoying the summer, but I also hope you're taking some precautions. Check out the links to learn what you can do.
