It's home to the greatest concentration of world class distance runners in history. Because of the tremendous success of these runners, who have dominated distance running, they have been exhaustively studied.

I'm struck by how these athletes train. Their strategies can benefit athlete and non-athlete alike:

  • Keep it simple. Many runners will leave their villages to go to training camps where they can stay focused and not be bombarded by family and business demands.
  • Work together. Runners train and work together as a group. The group provides support and encouragement.
  • Take time out. Intense training is punctuated by rest and recuperation. Intuitively, these runners understand that sleep-deprivation not only impacts our physical performance but also our psychological and spiritual well being.

What else can we learn from these athletes so that we can finish the races in our lives?

There is truly a lesson in this to learn about single minded focus and tenacity. Sincerity, commitment and dedication are the cornerstonres of any job well accomplished. Too often in life our goals get diluted by several factors. However we should never lose sight of our targets and keep them always in the range of our vision. Success is not just measured by the goals you achieve but also by how they are achieved.

It in our society is difficult at times to find all the variables that encompass that of the long distance runner, however, their ideas can be shared as you mentioned. I find if I meet with women of similar ages who have experienced similar life challenges, I feel supported and renewed by them. This strength I get from them, I can take to other parts of my life, family and children who are My Distance Challengers. I hope others will take the time to connect and meet the challenge that life gives them, whatever it may be, and like the mararthon runners of Africa, see life as a doable experience when we combine efforts.
