The best way to survive stress: Simplify

As we head into the holiday season, we would like to wish each member of our community peace, health, and serenity.

Let me share with you an interesting story. Last week, my wife and I were visiting family in Colorado, and we walked into a health food store to buy some vegetables. There was a stenciled sign on the cash register which went something like this: "The best way to survive is to simplify."

I did not think much of that comment until I returned to work and was bludgeoned with the kind of issues that we struggle with each day. Disappointments, frustrations, the times when things just do not go the way we had expected. Then I thought back to that very simple phrase.

What we are hearing through members of our community is the struggle of keeping focused, staying in the day, dealing with problems as they arise, and then moving on with grace and poise.

But to do so, there are some fundamental principles which are recurring among members of our community. Namely, the importance of a good night's sleep; regular and conscientious physical activity; and remembering that if we do not care for ourselves, we certainly can not care for others.

So, what emotional, spiritual, and physical tactics have each of us found most successful in dealing with some of the unpredictable challenges that life throws at us?

We learn from each other.

For Jude, I'm sure you know by now there is no easy way to recover from the tragic loss of your son. I lost my husband tragically to suicide. What I can tell you is that God sent his son Jesus to bear all our burdens and if you put your trust in him, he will help you through this time in your life. Find a good support group-you need to be able to share with people that have some understanding of your loss. God created us, body, soul and spirit and he can heal you, body, soul and spirit. May God bless you.

When I'm stressed out I take time out and get one of my guinea pigs out and hold her close to me, she seems to know when I'm having a bad day, and she starts to kiss my cheeks, I truely love her cause she is a good pet and she does relax me. and I become clam. another is transdental meditation, I put myself into a deep state like putting an egg shale around me, where no one can touch me, I transfix on a point, til I go in to a state of blindness, at that point, I am under, and no one can bring me out of it. til I'm ready, usally I'm under for about an hour or two. this is total mind and body control, something I've learn in martial arts. from my japanese master when I was young. I stayed with him til his death. from 6years to 18 years and became a 5th degree black belt. thank you for your time sincerely walter

Life is not fair. It never will be. What's right for others may not be right for you. Listen to your own voice. Don't think Why me? Think, why not me? If I didn't have these challenges and problems I would not be part of the human race - imperfect as it is, it is the only script we are given. Remember that people treat you the way you allow them to treat you. It is very very difficult to stay focused and positive in the midst of turmoil and crisis. My heart weeps for Jude and her great loss and NO there is no cure for that because there is no cure for love. I think, if one can master up the energy to look for ways to help others in need may be the only path to some form of healing. The realization that you are not alone - others feel what you feel; both the good and the bad emotions are felt by everyone. no one - no matter how rich, beautiful, or healthy can escape life's great challenges and losses. Reach out. Ask for help and help others even if they don't ask. Be kin

Due to an illness, I have times when I can't stay focused long enough to think things through to the calm place. There are almost all negative thoughts over which I have little control. Since I call these times of being under a spell, I know that I am doing everything I can to be cured, but my doctor is too busy and forgets to refill RXs, my Rxs provider made a mistake and eliminated an RX from their list, now I am struggling with that. I tried a new medication and went into a hurx after it wore off. It was the first time I had slept eight hours in 13 years. I wanted it to work and it did, but my disease dumped toxins into my body soon after the first use. I can't stand to go through another spell...they are called herx. Calm seems to be upset every day with an outside influence that must be dealt with in order to stay alive. I am tired, mentally. Well, enough moaning. I will do some art. Thank you for listening...really...I mean it.
