Bronchitol: A new treatment for cystic fibrosis?
What can you tell me about a new drug called Bronchitol for cystic fibrosis?
- No name / No state given
Answer
Bronchitol is an inhaled, dry powder form of mannitol, a simple sugar. It's still in phase III clinical trials for treatment of excess mucus problems in conditions of the lower airways — specifically cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis and some forms of chronic bronchitis that are associated with excess mucus. Bronchitol is thought to loosen and thin secretions in the airways so that they can be coughed out more easily. However, Bronchitol doesn't replace usual measures for treating these conditions, such as antibiotics, postural drainage and bronchodilators.
Although early results look promising, researchers will need at least another year to fully evaluate Bronchitol's effectiveness and safety.
