The Diabetes Expo, organized by the American Diabetes Association, is hosted in many states throughout the year, and will be in Minneapolis on Oct. 24.

What is the Diabetes Expo?

At the Expo, you can learn how to thrive with diabetes and receive tips on how to eat healthier, be more active, monitor your blood glucose, and take care of your feet and eyes. It is mainly geared towards adults with diabetes type 2, but it is for anyone with diabetes or who is concerned about diabetes prevention.

According to the ADA web site, at the Expo you can:

  • Participate in free health screenings.
  • Consult with diabetes experts who can answer your questions.
  • Learn about American Diabetes Association resources.
  • Join fun cooking and fitness demonstrations.
  • Learn about the newest diabetes products, technology, resources and treatments.
  • Attend education workshops.
  • Get free samples.
  • Meet other people living with diabetes.

Some of the workshop topics are:

  • "Emotions Of Living With Diabetes"
  • "Surgery As An Option For Type 2 Diabetes"
  • "Diabetes Management In Financially Troubled Times"
  • "Weight Loss Surgery — Promising Option For Treating Type 2 Diabetes"
  • "Keeping Kids With Diabetes Safe At School"
  • "Insulin Myths And Realities"

Free Health Screenings include:

  • A1C
  • Blood pressure
  • BMI
  • Bone density
  • Cholesterol
  • Diabetes risk assessment using blood glucose testing
  • Eye
  • Foot

The Expo is free, but you must either register online through the American Diabetes Association or your diabetes educator can give you a courtesy ticket. Some communities provide free transportation and your certified diabetes educator can provide information about that as well. For those of you in the international community, World Diabetes Day is Nov. 14.
