Results of the glucose challenge test are given in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or millimoles per liter (mmol/L). One hour after drinking the 50-gram glucose solution:

  • A normal blood sugar level is lower than 130 to 140 mg/dL (7.2 mmol/L to 7.8 mmol/L).
  • A blood sugar level of 130 to 140 mg/dL (7.2 mmol/L to 7.8 mmol/L) or higher may indicate gestational diabetes.

If the results of your glucose challenge test indicate the possibility of gestational diabetes, your doctor will likely use another blood test — typically the glucose tolerance test — to determine whether you truly have gestational diabetes.
