Risk factors

Conditions that increase your risk of kidney failure include:

  • Diabetes, which is the most common risk factor for chronic kidney failure in the United States
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Lupus erythematosus
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Chronic glomerulonephritis
  • Kidney disease present at birth (congenital)
  • Bladder outlet obstruction
  • Overexposure to toxins and to some medications
  • Family history of kidney disease
  • Age 60 or older
