Radionuclide (nuclear) scanning

Illustration of a woman undergoing a radionuclide (nuclear) scan

A positron emission tomography (PET) scan is a special form of radionuclide (nuclear) scanning. A nuclear scan is obtained by a special camera that detects radiation given off by a radioactive substance put into your body. During the scanning, the camera moves while you remain still.
