Primary sclerosing cholangitis

Illustration of primary sclerosing cholangitis

The bile ducts carry bile from your liver to your small intestine. When primary sclerosing cholangitis damages the bile ducts, bile can back up into the liver, causing damage to liver cells. Primary sclerosing cholangitis progresses slowly, but usually leads to liver failure.
