Petechiae

Photograph showing thick pattern of red dots on lower leg

Petechiae result from bleeding (hemorrhage) of the small blood vessels (capillaries) in the skin due to a low number of blood cells that help with clotting (platelets). Petechiae appear as tiny dots that may range in color from red to bluish purple.
