Prevention medication for migraine

By Mayo Clinic staff

Preventive therapy can help keep migraines from occurring. Preventive therapy may be an option if:

  • You have two or more debilitating headaches a month
  • You take pain-relieving medication more than twice a week
  • Acute medication doesn't provide sufficient relief or doesn't work at all
  • Overuse of acute medications leads to rebound headaches
  • The side effects of acute treatment are bothersome, even if the treatment effectively stops pain
  • You experience an uncommon variety of migraine that may increase your risk of brain damage
