Calcium channel blockers for migraine prevention

By Mayo Clinic staff

Calcium channel blockers are cardiovascular drugs commonly used to lower blood pressure. Some can also help prevent migraine. Verapamil (Calan, Covera) is the most common choice.

Verapamil may cause constipation, dizziness and flushing. It also slows your heart rate. Don't take verapamil if you're already using beta blockers or you have:

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Heart block
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Slow heart rate
