Question

Smart Balance: Are cholesterol-lowering products safe for everyone?

Is it safe to eat Smart Balance or other cholesterol-lowering products if you don't have high cholesterol?

Answer

from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D.

Cholesterol-lowering products such as Smart Balance are designed for people who need to lower their cholesterol levels. If you have healthy cholesterol levels, eating cholesterol-lowering products isn't likely to cause problems. However, you're not likely to benefit from these products. Also, there's some concern that cholesterol-lowering products reduce absorption of the antioxidant beta carotene. In fact, the American Heart Association doesn't recommend cholesterol-lowering products for adults who have healthy cholesterol levels, pregnant women or children. Remember, a healthy lifestyle is the best way to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Eat plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Limit your intake of saturated fat and cholesterol, and avoid trans fat as much as possible. Include physical activity in your daily routine. If you smoke, stop.
