Cosmetic vaginoplasty: Is it safe?

A friend told me about a cosmetic procedure called vaginoplasty that is supposed to tighten a woman's vaginal muscles after childbirth. Is this safe?

Answer

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure being marketed by some doctors as a way to tighten and tone a woman's vaginal muscles after childbirth — supposedly to improve the appearance of the vagina and to increase sexual enjoyment. However, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has warned against so-called "vaginal rejuvenation" procedures, saying these methods are unproved and potentially risky.

Although there are legitimate medical reasons for genital surgery, ACOG warns that cosmetic vaginal procedures are not "medically indicated." Also, the safety and effectiveness of such cosmetic procedures aren't supported by solid scientific studies. For these reasons, the potential risks — including infection, scarring, nerve damage and loss of sensation — far outweigh the possible benefits, if any.
