Coping and support

By Mayo Clinic staff

Whooping cough isn't necessarily something that can be overcome in a week or two. This bacterial infection may persist for six weeks or longer. That means you may need to be off work for an extended period while you recover from whooping cough yourself or attend to a sick child.

Be familiar with your company's sick-leave policy or short-term leave for such family health emergencies. As a parent, you may want to prepare a list of in-home child care providers whom you can call when your child has to be at home and you can't be there yourself.
